What would you like to do?
I have FTP software and know how to configure & use it.
I do not have and therefore need to get FTP software.
I have FTP software but need to know how to configure it for the TOOSW FTP Site. Windows - Macintosh.
I want to Delete files on the FTP Site.
I need to review The Rules.

If you have any trouble with these procedures, contact Nelson by email here, or by telephone: 480-730-0842 (office) or 602-223-1787 (pager). If you do not want to deal with any of this, contact Nelson to make arrangements to have all of this set up for you; it requires about an hour. You will need Internet access.

We maintain an FTP site that is used for uploading and downloading CAD files as well as other types of documents such as Word, Excel, and graphics files.   Using FTP to transfer files is more efficient, faster and reliable than e-mail attachments.   Please read The Rules before transferring files.

If you're transferring CAD files, we use Archicad 6.5 on a Macintosh, OS 9. We can open these file types...

Project files
.DWG .DXF Zoom Wavefront
Picture files
.GIF .JPG .TIFF .BMP
PICT (Mac only) .WMF (Windows only)

I'm ready to transfer...

1. Configure your FTP software as follows...

  • Host address:
    shelbywilson.com
  • Login type:
    Anonymous

This is an "anonymous" FTP site. Anonymous means that no login nor password is required.

2. Connect Procedure will depend on your FTP software.
3. When connected, transfer your files, in either direction. See THE RULES (yes, we've got rules; but not too many).
4. When your transfer is finished, disconnect. Exit your FTP software.

The Rules...
We need rules because we all will be using each other's files.   These rules will minimize the chaos...

1. All Uploaded files will be placed in Your Company's folder. You may create sub-folders within your company's folder if you so desire.

If these conventions do not work for you, please get in touch with Joanne @ 480-488-3582, and make other arrangements for a naming scheme.

You do not have to encode the date in the filename because it will be "date-time stamped" by the server's operating system when you upload it.

Since more than one person is involved in using your files, you may wish to consider observing the following conventions when naming your files...

jobnam_what_rev#.ext
where,

  • jobname = the job's common name
  • what = abbreviated file contents (plan-schm-b, rev-elev, etc)
  • rev# = revision number or letter
  • .ext = file type extension (.dwg, .doc, .xls, etc)
  • If AutoCAD file, what AutoCAD version #?

Adopting file naming standards will enhance communication between TOOSW drafters and your company's drafters as well as eliminate working on the wrong version or out-of-date version. See Rule #2 below.

2. Our FTP site is managed & maintained by it's users. Downloaders accept the responsibility of deleting the files you download from the TOOSW FTP Site.

Note
This FTP container IS NOT a place to STORE files permanently. In fact, every file is considered deletable. So... download it and open it. If successful, return to FTP and delete it; if not successful, re-download it and try again. If it still fails, contact the uploader and ask them to re-upload it.

DO NOT delete a downloaded file until you have successfully...

  • saved it on your computer, AND...
  • opened it in your software to confirm it's accuracy

In other words, confirm that it is the correct file and version before commencing work on it.

3. After you have Uploaded a file, send an E-mail mssg to the person who will be using it. This courtesy announces it's availability. If you want to overdo it, telephone them.

Compression Guidelines...

If the file is <= 1 meg, just transfer it (about 5 minutes); if > 1 meg, zip it...

  • For Windows, use WinZip
  • For Macintosh, use MacZip

If you don't have these "zippers," go to download.com and get them, install, and use. Please don't use anything that is NOT compatible with these zippers. Remember, we're using FTP to simplify the file transfer process. If everyone uses the same zippers, we all win.

Include in your E-mail mssg the following...

  • your name
  • your company
  • File type (.dwg, .doc, .xls, etc)
  • comments about the file's contents: what it is, what it replaces, what it includes, etc.
  • if its an AutoCAD file, what version of AutoCAD?
  • whether or not it's compressed: if so, the compression method you used.
4. When cleaning up and deleting files, only delete your files. DO NOT delete any files that don't belong to you.
